Essentials of River Canoeing Skills – Build Confidence and Control on Moving Water
The Essentials of River Canoeing Skills Course is an ACA Level 2 training designed for paddlers who want to develop the techniques, safety awareness, and confidence needed to navigate gentle moving water by canoe. This full-day, hands-on course blends skill-building with practical river knowledge, helping you feel prepared for local day trips on creeks and rivers throughout Pennsylvania.
Participants will learn a variety of canoe strokes on both flatwater and moving water, including efficient forward paddling, sweep strokes, draw strokes, and low braces. The course also covers essential river maneuvers such as ferrying, eddy turns, and peel-outs, giving you the boat control needed to move smoothly through current. You’ll also gain an understanding of how to read river features, identify hazards, communicate on the water, and plan safe outings with your paddling partners.
Additional instruction includes cold-water safety, Leave No Trace ethics for paddlers, self-rescue techniques, and the equipment needed for safe river travel. Whether you’re brand new to river canoeing or looking to strengthen your existing skills, this course offers a supportive environment to practice and grow.
Equipment Needed
Participants should bring a canoe, paddle, life jacket (PFD) with whistle, and water-appropriate clothing and footwear. Canoe, paddle, and PFD rentals are available during registration.
