Wilderness First Aid Course – Essential Training for Remote Emergency Response
The Wilderness First Aid Course provides the knowledge and hands-on skills needed to recognize, manage, and respond to medical emergencies in remote settings. This two-day, 16-hour training is ideal for hikers, backpackers, scout leaders, guides, camp staff, and anyone who spends time in areas where professional medical help may be delayed.

Course Overview
When emergencies occur in remote areas, knowing what to do can make all the difference. Hiking Hound Adventures, LLC’s Wilderness First Aid Course equips participants with the knowledge and skills to recognize, manage, and respond to injuries and medical emergencies in backcountry and outdoor settings. This training goes beyond classroom instruction, offering realistic, hands-on experiences where emergencies are most likely to occur.

Participants will learn and practice:

  • Primary and secondary assessments for injury evaluation
  • Stabilization and management of head, brain, neck, and spinal injuries
  • Wound, burn, and infection care using limited supplies
  • Splinting and stabilization of bone and joint injuries with improvised materials
  • Recognition and treatment of hypothermia, heat-related illnesses, and altitude sickness
  • Identification and management of allergies and anaphylaxis
  • Patient packaging and evacuation planning
  • Scenario-based exercises to reinforce decision-making in realistic environments

Immersive Learning Options

  • Backpacking Trip on Pinchot Trail: Hike approximately 10 miles over 2 days, spend one night at a backcountry campsite, and practice first aid skills directly in the environments where they are most needed. Meals match typical backpacking fare, and optional gear rentals are available.
  • Canoe Trip on Susquehanna River: Paddle scenic sections, camp on islands, and apply wilderness medical skills in a water-based backcountry setting. Canoes, paddles, PFDs, and group camping gear are provided.
  • Classroom & Field Hybrid (Louis Scott Park): Traditional instruction supplemented with hands-on exercises in nearby outdoor spaces.

Adult CPR/AED Requirement
A valid Adult CPR/AED certification is required prior to joining the course. Participants who need certification may select the optional blended learning CPR/AED program during registration. The online portion is completed before Day 1, followed by an in-person skills assessment one hour before the course begins.
