We’re looking for a Outdoor Education Instructor to take on a key role in guiding and mentoring our seasonal instructors while leading high-quality outdoor programs.
Job Overview:
As a Outdoor Education Instructor, you will be responsible for overseeing the delivery of our outdoor programs while managing and mentoring a team of instructors. You will be a hands-on leader, guiding activities like hiking, canoeing, kayaking, backpacking, and wilderness education, while ensuring the safety and success of all participants. You’ll lead by example, supporting and coaching other instructors, providing them with guidance, feedback, and professional development opportunities. Your leadership will be vital in delivering a memorable and impactful outdoor experience for our participants.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and Oversee Outdoor Programs: Lead and instruct a variety of outdoor programs including hiking, backpacking, canoeing, kayaking, and kids’ adventure camps. Ensure all activities are engaging, educational, and executed safely.
- Supervise and Mentor Instructors: Provide direction, coaching, and ongoing feedback to a team of seasonal instructors. Lead pre-trip meetings, support with staff training, and foster a collaborative, positive team dynamic.
- Safety and Risk Management: Take the lead in ensuring the safety of all participants and staff by managing risk assessments, monitoring weather and environmental conditions, and enforcing safety protocols at all times.
- Program Development and Quality Control: Work with the Program Director to develop and refine outdoor programs. Help maintain high-quality program standards and ensure consistent delivery of educational content and adventure experiences.
- Participant Engagement: Create an inclusive, welcoming environment where participants of all skill levels feel supported. Promote skill-building, leadership, environmental stewardship, and a love for the outdoors.
- Administrative Support: Assist with planning, preparation, and logistical coordination for each program, including managing group rosters, equipment inventories, and communication with participants and families.
- Customer Service & Communication: Serve as the primary point of contact for participants and families before, during, and after programs. Ensure that communication is clear, timely, and professional.
- Equipment Management: Ensure proper care, maintenance, and usage of all program equipment. Assist with packing and unpacking equipment, and help maintain inventories.
- Leadership on Site: Lead by example, maintaining a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and enthusiasm for outdoor education. Take initiative to solve problems and ensure smooth operation of programs.
Qualifications:
- Experience: 2+ years of experience in outdoor education, leading programs, or instructing outdoor activities like hiking, backpacking, kayaking, or canoeing. Prior leadership or supervisory experience is preferred.
- Outdoor Skills: Strong knowledge of outdoor skills, safety practices, and environmental stewardship. Experience in teaching outdoor skills such as navigation, wilderness survival, and first aid.
- Leadership Abilities: Proven ability to lead and inspire a team of instructors, providing guidance and support while maintaining a fun, professional work environment.
- Certifications: Wilderness First Responder (WFR) required. Current First Aid & CPR certification. Additional certifications in specific outdoor activities (e.g., ACA Kayak Instructor, Leave No Trace Trainer) are a plus.
- Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to engage and motivate participants and staff.
- Safety Focused: Ability to manage risk in a variety of outdoor environments, ensuring participant and staff safety at all times.
- Physical Fitness: Ability to work and lead in physically demanding outdoor environments. Must be able to carry equipment, hike long distances, and stay active for extended periods.
- Passion for Outdoors and Teaching: A deep passion for the outdoors and for teaching others how to connect with and enjoy nature. Enjoy working with a variety of ages and skill levels.
- Transportation: Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.
- Clean Criminal History: Clean FBI Child Abuse screening and and criminal background check required

Schedule & Compensation:
This is a part time position. Work schedules may vary based on program needs, and some weekend and evening shifts may be required. Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience.
