GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK:

MT. CAMMERER VIA LOW GAP TRAIL

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the most remarkable places in the world. With its ease of access, unbelievable cultural and natural diversity, and its abundance of activities, there is truly something for everyone. People have been drawn to this area for the better part of 14,000 years for good reason; its multiple forest types make it home to numerous species of flora and fauna. There are native brook trout populations in the streams, over 1500 species of wildflowers, and a salamander that can only be found in the Smokies. The spectacular geology makes for some of the best and most fascinating hiking in the country.

I make it a point to take at least a biannual trip to the park and have always experienced something new. The park has 850 miles of trail making it hard to choose just one, but I think my favorite is the hike to Mt. Cammerer. At just over 11 miles round trip from Cosby campground, you might question such a short hike when around 70 miles of the AT run through the park. However, the hike to Cammerer offers a physical challenge for even the seasoned hiker and arguably the best views in the park.

Starting on the Low Gap Trail out of Cosby, you will travel just under 3 miles to join the Appalachian Trail. Before you head up the trail though, take a moment to enjoy the falls and the footbridge over Cosby creek at around the half mile mark.

From there you can tackle the remaining 2.4 rugged miles to the AT, but not before topping off your water as it will be sparse (or non-existent) for the remainder of your journey. You will then begin to gain elevation quickly as you hike up the multiple switchbacks to the AT intersection. This is a great spot for a much needed rest.

The hike will continue along the Appalachian Trail for the next 2.6 miles until you come to the short Mt. Cammerer spur trail. This is the culmination of all of your efforts; 5.5 miles and 3045 feet of elevation gain and you’ve made it.Mt. Cammerer is a 4945 foot mountain that gives you a full 360 degree view of the Smoky Mountains and surrounding area. The notable feature of the mountain is a restored CCC Fire Tower circa 1937. Take some time to explore the rock features, take in all of the views, snap some photos, and fuel up with food and water before heading back down the same way you came up.
