Essentials of Canoeing Skills – ACA Level 2 Course
The Essentials of Canoeing Skills Course is designed to introduce participants to safe and effective paddling in both tandem and solo canoes on flatwater and gently moving rivers. This comprehensive ACA-certified course builds foundational canoe skills, teaches basic safety and rescue techniques, and strengthens your confidence on the water. Whether you’re brand new to canoeing or looking to refine your technique, come ready for a full day of hands-on learning!
What to Expect
We’ll cover a variety of essential canoeing skills, including:
Loading and unloading your canoe
Basic knots and canoe carries
Launching and landing from shore or dock
Proper posture, balance, and trim
Key strokes and maneuvers:
Forward and reverse strokes
Sweep strokes (forward and reverse)
Draws, prys, bow and cross-bow draws
Safety topics:
Group management
Communication on the water
Rescue priorities and techniques
Canoe-over-canoe rescues
Controlled wet exits and re-entry methods
We focus on practical skills to help you paddle more efficiently, handle emergencies, and enjoy your time on the water safely.
Course Details
Duration: 6 hours (full-day program)
Location: Gladwyne, PA (on the Schuylkill River)
Who it’s for: Ages 14+ recommended; minors must be accompanied by a guardian
What’s included: Professional instruction, ACA course completion card (with successful participation)
Equipment Needed
Canoe (solo or tandem)
Paddle
Coast Guard-approved life jacket (PFD) with whistle
Water-appropriate clothing and footwear
Dry bag for personal items
Lunch, snacks, and plenty of water
Sunscreen, sunglasses, hat recommended

Rental canoes and gear are available—please select rental options during registration if needed.
Essential Eligibility Requirements
Participants must:
Independently participate in all activities listed
Communicate effectively with instructors and other participants
Manage personal care and mobility independently (or with assistance)
Be prepared for moderate physical activity in an outdoor environment
