Tree Identification Hike

Dendrology: noun: den·drol·o·gy: /denˈdräləjē/: The study of trees.

Walking through the woods, we are surrounded by trees. Ever wonder what they are? Join Hiking Hound Adventures, LLC as we break down the steps to identifying trees. With us you will learn the basics to tree identification like the parts of a tree, how trees grow, and important terminology. Simple vs. compound leaves, leaf scars, bark patterns, growth patters, fruit, and more! We will learn several of the species that play important roles in Pennsylvania’s forests like maples, oaks, beeches, and poplars to name a few.  Forests are complex, living ecosystems and understanding them is a fascinating way to enjoy the outdoors.

Your instructor, Andy, has a B.S. in Forestry from the University of Kentucky and has a great understanding of trees and forest dynamics. He is ready to share his love of the woods with you!

Native Wildflower Hike

Wildflowers add vibrant color and life to our landscapes, but how much do you really know about them? Join Hiking Hound Adventures, LLC for a guided hike where we’ll explore the beauty and importance of native wildflowers. You’ll learn the basics of wildflower identification, including key characteristics like leaf shape, petal arrangement, habitat preferences, and blooming seasons. We’ll also discuss the vital role these plants play in local ecosystems—supporting pollinators, preventing erosion, and even serving as natural indicators of environmental health.

We’ll identify several native species commonly found in Pennsylvania, from delicate spring ephemerals like trilliums and bloodroot to hardy summer bloomers like black-eyed Susan’s and wild bergamot. Whether you’re a seasoned plant enthusiast or just curious about the flowers along the trail, this hike will deepen your connection to the natural world.

Dusk Wildlife Walk

Crepuscular: adjective: cre·pus·cu·lar: /krəˈpəskyələr/: Active during twilight.

As the sun sets and the sky shifts to shades of gold and violet, the forest awakens in a whole new way. Join Hiking Hound Adventures, LLC for a guided dusk hike, where we’ll explore the sights and sounds of nature’s nighttime transition. As daylight fades, we’ll listen for the calls of owls, watch for bats darting through the air, and search for nocturnal and crepuscular creatures like deer, foxes, raccoons, and fireflies.

Along the way, we’ll discuss how wildlife adapts to low-light conditions, the importance of twilight activity in the food chain, and how to use all of our senses—sight, sound, and even smell—to observe nature after dark. Whether you’re hoping to spot an elusive animal or simply experience the peace of the evening woods, this hike offers a unique way to connect with the outdoors.

Birding Hike

From the rhythmic drumming of a woodpecker to the melodic song of a warbler, birds bring life and music to the outdoors. Join Hiking Hound Adventures, LLC for a guided birding hike, where we’ll explore the rich birdlife of Pennsylvania’s forests, meadows, and waterways. Whether you’re a seasoned birder or just starting out, this hike will help sharpen your observation skills and introduce you to a variety of local species.

We’ll learn how to identify birds by sight and sound, covering key characteristics like plumage, behavior, habitat, and song patterns. Expect to see (and hear!) a diverse array of birds, from soaring hawks and darting kingfishers to cheerful chickadees and vibrant warblers. Along the way, we’ll discuss migration patterns, bird adaptations, and the vital role these feathered creatures play in the ecosystem.

*Recommended for all ages. Participants under the age of 18 must register and be accompanied by a registered adult.
