Kids Intermediate Fishing: Beyond the Basics
This course builds on the fundamentals taught in our Introduction to Fishing program and helps young anglers become more confident, capable, and independent on the water. Participants will learn essential fishing knots, rig their own tackle, master spinning reels, and explore the exciting world of artificial lures while enjoying plenty of time with a line in the water.
Important Note: This program builds on foundational fishing skills and is designed for participants who can already cast, retrieve, and demonstrate a basic working knowledge of fishing. Introduction to Fishing is recommended as a prerequisite. This program will not focus on basic fishing fundamentals and will instead focus on skill progression and development. Who It’s For
This series is designed for kids ages 8 to 14 who have completed Introduction to Fishing and are ready to build on their foundational skills.
Prerequisite Recommended
Important Skill Prerequisite
Participants must already know how to cast a fishing rod and operate a push-button (spincast) reel independently. This is an intermediate-level program and does not cover the basic fundamentals of casting, holding a rod, or operating a push-button reel.
If your child is new to fishing or still needs help with these basic skills, we recommend starting with Introduction to Fishing: A First-Time Angling Experience for Kids.
This program picks up where our Introduction to Fishing course leaves off. Instead of spending time on the basics, we’ll focus on helping young anglers become more independent and confident by learning new knots, rigging their own tackle, using spinning reels, and fishing with artificial lures.
What to Expect
- Learn and practice essential fishing knots
- Learn how to attach hooks, swivels, sinkers, and other tackle
- Build and rig your own fishing setup
- Learn how to operate and cast a spinning reel
- Practice casting with greater control and accuracy
- Explore different types of artificial lures
- Learn basic lure retrieval and presentation techniques
- Practice safe fish handling and catch-and-release
- Spend plenty of time actually fishing

What They’ll Learn
Knot Tying & Rigging
Kids will learn several useful fishing knots and how to use them to build their own fishing rigs. They’ll practice attaching hooks, swivels, sinkers, and other terminal tackle before putting their new setup to work.
Spinning Reel Fundamentals
Ready to move beyond the push-button reel? Kids will learn how a spinning reel works, how to operate the bail, and how to cast with a spinning setup. We’ll work on casting technique, accuracy, and confidence while fishing.
Beyond the Bobber: Artificial Lures
Kids will get an introduction to fishing with artificial lures, including soft plastics, spinners, crankbaits, and other common lure styles. They’ll learn how different lures work and practice basic retrieval and presentation techniques.

Rather than spending the class learning how to hold a rod or cast a push-button reel, we’ll pick up where those foundational skills leave off. Kids will learn how to set up their own gear, use new types of tackle, try a spinning reel, experiment with artificial lures, and make adjustments based on what’s happening on the water.
It’s a hands-on opportunity to build real fishing skills while getting plenty of time with a line in the water.
