Themed Hikes
Our themed hikes focus on specific aspects of the natural world. Each program offers a hands-on opportunity to learn something new while exploring local trails and natural areas.
Tree Identification Hike
Learn to recognize Pennsylvania’s native trees by their leaves, bark, and growth patterns. Explore how trees grow, understand their ecological roles, and discover common species such as maples, oaks, beeches, and poplars.
Native Wildflower Hike
Journey through meadows and woodland trails as you learn to identify native wildflowers. Discover how these plants support pollinators, prevent erosion, and contribute to ecosystem health. Seasonal variations make each hike unique!
Dusk Wildlife Walk
Explore the forest as it comes alive at twilight! Learn about nocturnal animals like owls, bats, raccoons, and deer, and discover how they adapt to low-light conditions. This sensory-focused hike reveals a new side of nature after dark.
Birding Hike
Listen, look, and learn as you identify local bird species by sight and sound. Explore bird migration, habitats, and song patterns, and get to know some of Pennsylvania’s most fascinating feathered residents.
Special Location Hikes
Explore the unique natural features, history, and conservation stories of specific parks and preserves. These hikes highlight what makes each location special, from local wildlife and scenic landscapes to historic properties and habitat restoration projects.
Explore Lorimer Preserve
Location: George Lorimer Preserve, Open Land Conservancy
Duration: 1.5 hours
Distance: Approximately 3 miles at an easy pace
Join us for a guided exploration of George Lorimer Preserve and discover the property’s natural features, history, and ongoing conservation efforts. This hike offers time to slow down, enjoy the scenery, look and listen for birds, and take photographs along the way.
Once a working farm, the preserve now features a mix of meadows, woodlands, Valley Creek, and a pond known for sightings of great blue herons and other wildlife. We’ll explore how the property has changed over time and learn about the Open Land Conservancy’s efforts to restore native woodlands, manage invasive plants, and improve wildlife habitat.
Along the trail, we’ll discuss the history of the property, observe the surrounding landscape, and learn how local conservation projects help protect and restore these important natural spaces.
